Shanghai extends grand prix deal

Shanghai has agreed a deal to host Formula 1 races until 2017, ending months of speculation about the future of the Chinese Grand Prix. Although work still needs to be completed on the circuit for it to pass an FIA safety inspection ahead of this year's race, the Shanghai Sports Bureau has announced that a fresh deal has been agreed for the event. Zhao Wen, vice mayor of Shanghai, told local media on Wednesday that officials had managed to negotiate a reduced rate for the event in a bid to keep it on the calendar.

Hirvonen resists Ostberg for victory

Mikko Hirvonen held off Mads Ostberg to win the first event of the World Rally Championship's new era by just six seconds after three thrilling days in Sweden, as Fords filled the podium. The 2011 season-opener will be remembered equally for the spectacularly close competition offered by the latest generation World Rally Cars - with just 15s covering Hirvonen, Ostberg, Petter Solberg, Jari-Matti Latvala and Sebastien Ogier starting the final day - and the emergence of Ostberg as a potential winner. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- The recently repaved surface at Daytona International Speedway is fast. Really fast. Maybe too fast.

In the most significant test on the 2 1/2 -mile superspeedway, cars topped 203 mph Friday during practice for the Budweiser Shootout.

Joey Logano turned the fast lap with an average speed of 203.087 mph in the second of two practice sessions. Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch also topped 203 mph. Several others were close behind. In all, 10 cars hit 200 mph. Four more were in the 199 mph range, creating some concern at NASCAR's most famous track.
