McLaren says spot-on strategy vital

McLaren believes that ironing out strategy mistakes is going to be just as important as bringing improvements to its car in its bid to beat Red Bull Racing to the world title this year. With McLaren working flat out to deliver the car upgrades that it feels it needs to get on even-terms with Red Bull Racing in qualifying, the team is also aware that a quick car is no use if errors are made in tyre tactics. And there was no better proof of that than in China last weekend when Sebastian Vettel failed to convert his dominant pole position performance into a race win after he stuck to a two-stop strategy.

FIA considering tweak to running order

The FIA is considering a change of regulation ahead of the next round of the World Rally Championship to reverse the running order on rallies. The top 15 crews after day one of world rallies were reversed until the end of the event, before a regulation change at the start of 2008, which meant the cars ran in championship order on day one and rally order on days two and three. Citroen team principal Olivier Quesnel railed against this last season and raised the issue in Jordan last week, where he felt Sebastien Loeb and Mikko Hirvonen were ruled out of the fight because they had to run first on the road.

Mike Conway claimed his first IndyCar Series race victory with a late charge in Long Beach, despite tumbling down the order with a messy first pitstop. Teams poised for winter plans rethink

Formula 1 teams may need a rethink about the way they launch their new cars next year, after those that gambled on late-updates to their 2011 challengers struggled in early races. That is the view of Mercedes GP team principal Ross Brawn, who believes that his team may well have been better off spending more time getting to understand how to get the most out of a car, rather than leaving it to the last minute for aerodynamic updates
